Saint Bernard Breed Overview

Want to bring home an adorable Saint Bernard puppy for sale? You’ve come to the right place. At Keystone Puppies, our mission is to help Saint Bernard puppies find their forever homes. In addition to Saint Bernards, we work with a range of other breeds — including Newfoundlands, Newfypoos, English Mastiffs, and more! All our puppies are bred with the highest standards of ethical integrity — free of common genetic defects that impact less responsible breeders — and are raised in happy homes where they’re treated like part of the family before becoming part of yours!

The Saint Bernard breed is an iconic breed with a rich and interesting history. They originated as far back as the 17th century in the Italian and Swiss Alps. These pups were used as guard and rescue dogs by hospice workers, assisting travelers who got lost in the snowy mountain passes.

They were then bred with Newfoundlands to create a larger, more powerful dog that could better handle deep snow and freezing temperatures. The result was a large, strong breed with an incredible sense of smell capable of leading people out of peril.

Today these dogs are known for their loving nature, courageous spirit, and impressive size.

Saint Bernard Puppies Temperament

Saint Bernards are gentle giants with BIG personalities! They may look intimidating to some, but their temperament is incredibly loving, loyal and devoted. They tend to make wonderful family pets thanks to their low energy level and sweet nature.

Despite being quite large, they are relatively easy-going and make excellent companion dogs. These lovable pups can even make great therapy dogs due to their calm demeanor and friendly disposition.

You will often find that Saint Bernards can be easily trained when rewarded with positive reinforcement methods, as they love food and attention!

Saint Bernard Puppy Health Considerations

Though generally very happy and long-lived — with an average lifespan of around 8-10 years — our Saint Bernards for sale are not without their unique health concerns. Like every breed of dog, there are a few conditions you should be aware of before you consider purchasing one of our Saint Bernard puppies for sale. Understanding the risks allows you to know the signs and prevent small health concerns from turning into big ones.

Saint Bernard puppies are at a somewhat elevated risk for developing the following conditions:

  • Gastrointestinal Issues
  • Hip Dysplasia
  • Obesity
  • Eye Problems
  • Cancer

Some medical issues Saint Bernards are prone to include gastric torsion, bloating, and hip dysplasia. Saint Bernards also often suffer from obesity due to their tendency to overeat and for lower activity levels—it’s especially important for them to be at an ideal weight. They can also be more prone to drooling and eye problems like entropion, which can cause redness and discomfort in the eyes.

With some basic knowledge of the breed’s health concerns, you can be sure to give your Saint Bernard the best possible chance at a long and healthy life. Finding a Saint Bernard puppy for sale from a reputable breeder can also dramatically — although, not eliminate — the risk of your dog developing some of these conditions. At Keystone Puppies, we work exclusively with experienced breeders who are committed to producing healthy & happy pups. Saint Bernard Puppies Coat & Coat Care

Taking care of a Saint Bernard’s coat can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience. These dogs have beautiful double coats that require regular brushing to keep them looking their best. It is important to brush at least twice a week, using a firm bristle comb or slicker brush to remove excess undercoat and prevent tangles from occurring. Their outer coat should also be groomed regularly with a wide-toothed comb. To make sure the fur stays soft and healthy, trimming any knots and mats is important as well. Brushing your Saint Bernard on a regular basis helps reduce shedding and make for a healthier coat!
