With their glorious hair and adorable faces, Yorkshire Terriers, aka Yorkies, are one of the most popular dog breeds in the US. But don’t let their small size fool you, Yorkie puppies have the energy and attitude of true Terriers.
Like all Terriers, these pups were first bred to control pests and vermin. The silky Yorkshire Terrier was known by a few different names, including the Broken Haired Scotch Terrier and the Toy Terrier before the Yorkshire region claimed them as their own in 1874. These courageous ratters were bred to be small enough to fit into the nooks and cracks in mines and mill buildings of 19th-century Britain.
While originally prized to control pests, British hunters soon discovered that the Yorkie breed was small enough to carry in their pockets, making them convenient helpers to hunt down rabbits, foxes, and even badgers.
By 1885, these “tomboy” puppies were officially recognized by the AKC as members of the toy group.
- Country of Origin: England
- Weight: 3 - 7 lbs
- Height: 6 - 9 inches
- Color: If you are ready to adopt a Yorkshire Terrier, it’s time to learn about their coat and coat care. To meet AKC requirements, the Yorkshire Terrier must be tan or gold, with a blue saddle. However, many healthy, purebreds are tan or gold with a black saddle, solid gold or tan, liver, chocolate, or parti-color.
Yorkie Breed Temperament
Yorkie puppies are more than just an adorable face, they are active, confident, attention-loving, and fearless. These loyal and loving lap dogs are gentle around adult owners. However, their need for dominance can translate into nipping, and that means that they are not always a good match for families with small children. Additionally, Yorkie puppies are small enough to be seriously hurt by young children who don’t yet know how to be consistently gentle.
Their excellent hearing combined with exceptional intelligence and alertness make them wonderful watchdogs. While these feisty pups thrive on human affection and companionship, they tend to be wary of strangers and other dogs. Yorkie puppies for sale have been known to be stubborn and pick fights with larger dogs, so consistent training and socialization is needed to ensure they don’t become ankle biters.
Contrary to popular belief, Yorkshire Terriers don’t love to be carried around in designer handbags. While they enjoy cuddling and being close to their owners, like all dogs, the Yorkie breed enjoys walks outside and playing with toys.
Everything You Need to Know About Yorkshire Terrier Puppy Health
The Yorkshire Terrier breed’s average life expectancy averages 13 – 16 years. These tiny pups are at risk for injury and can be seriously hurt by falls or accidents, so be careful where you step. One of the most common health concerns with the breed is dental disease. Because these dogs have small jaws, their teeth may become crowded, and dental work may be required. Other issues to watch for are:
- Cataracts
- Collapsing Tracheas
- Portosystemic Shunt
- Lymphangiectasia

Like with all pets, make sure you take your pup in for regular vet checkups and keep them up to date with all shots and vaccinations.
Caring for Yorkie Puppy Coats
The typical fine, straight, and silky Yorkshire Terrier coat is low allergen. They do not shed to the same degree as other breeds, only losing small amounts of hair when bathed or brushed.
Yorkie puppies for sale are a hairdresser’s dream. Traditionally the coat is grown out long and is parted down the middle of the back. But their long, fine hair can be brushed and bound into ponytails or buns. Some owners prefer a more practical approach and keep the coat trimmed to a short cut.
Regardless of cut, daily brushing for this breed is recommended to avoid matting and to keep the coat healthy and shiny. Don’t bathe more than once a month, and less frequently if possible.
