West Highland Terrier Breed Overview

Want to bring home an adorable West Highland Terrier puppy for sale? You’ve come to the right place. At Keystone Puppies, our mission is to help Westie puppies find their forever homes. In addition to West Highland Terriers, we work with a range of other breeds — including Cairn Terriers, Coton de Tulears, Westiepoos, and more! All our puppies are bred with the highest standards of ethical integrity — free of common genetic defects that impact less responsible breeders — and are raised in happy homes where they’re treated like part of the family before becoming part of yours!

The West Highland Terrier, lovingly known as a Westie, has a proud history that goes way back to the 1700s. The breed was developed on the Scottish Islands of Argyll and later in the country’s Highlands by crossing Cairn Terriers and other small working terriers. Those hardy dogs were used for hunting badgers and otters, chasing away foxes and vermin, and generally keeping pests out of farmers’ crops.

By 1912, they were featured in their own kennel club in Scotland. Later on, US presidents such as Calvin Coolidge were known to have Westies as beloved furry friends. This witty little dog is known for its big personality and inquisitive nature; always ready to play or go on an adventure!

Westie Puppies Temperament

Westies are an energetic and spunky dog breed with a personality all its own. Despite their small size, these pups have no shortage of confidence; they love to explore and go on plenty of adventures. Westies tend to be independent but sociable with humans and other animals alike. They are loyal, brave and make excellent watchdogs without being overly yappy or aggressive. Their cheerful demeanor and high intelligence also makes them easy to train.

All in all, these little snow-white terriers make fantastic pets for families looking for a fun-loving companion.

West Highland Terrier Puppy Health Considerations

Though generally very happy and long-lived — with an average lifespan of around 12-15 years — our West Highland Terriers for sale are not without their unique health concerns. Like every breed of dog, there are a few conditions you should be aware of before you consider purchasing one of our Westie puppies for sale. Understanding the risks allows you to know the signs and prevent small health concerns from turning into big ones.

West Highland Terrier puppies are at a somewhat elevated risk for developing the following conditions:

  •   Eye Diseases
  •   Orthopedic Issues
  •   Chronic Skin Infections

Westies can be prone to several eye diseases such as cataracts and glaucoma. Orthopedic issues, including luxating patellas, also affect Westies. Finally, chronic skin infections may develop due to allergies or other causes.

With some basic knowledge of the breed’s health concerns, you can be sure to give your Westie the best possible chance at a long and healthy life. Finding a West Highland Terrier puppy for sale from a reputable breeder can also dramatically — although, not eliminate — the risk of your dog developing some of these conditions. At Keystone Puppies, we work exclusively with experienced breeders who are committed to producing healthy & happy pups. Westie Puppies Coat & Coat Care

The West Highland Terrier’s unique and curly double coat means that they require special attention when it comes to coat care. To help keep your Westie’s white coat looking its best and their skin healthy an important factor to consider is regular and frequent brushing. Ideally, brushing should be done on a weekly basis; however, during times of shedding more brushing might be necessary. In addition, regular baths with quality shampoo can also help maintain the quality of your Westie’s coat. Caring for this breed can be a lot of work, but the results are well worth it!
