Beagle Breed Overview

The Beagle breed originated in England as a cross between the Harrier and other Hounds of England. Other possible descendants of the Beagle are the Talbot Hound, the black & tan Irish Kerry Beagle and the Bloodhound. Known for their great sense of smell, Beagles were used for hunting in Pheasant & Quail hunts.
The Beagle was first registered by the AKC in 1885 and was grouped as Hound.

  • Height: 13 - 16 inches
  • Color: The most commonly seen Beagle color is black & tan. Many times there will be white on the chest, legs, under belly & possibly the face and tail. Other colors can be tri-color, yellow & white and orange & white.

The Beagle breed is gentle, intelligent, curious and playful. They enjoy receiving attention & praise from their owners. This joyful breed loves children and does well with other dogs. One distinctive trait of the Beagle is their howling bark.

Beagle Health Issues & Life Expectancy

The Beagle life expectancy is between 12 – 15 years. The Beagle breed is a relatively healthy breed. Some health concerns to look for are:

Beagle Coat & Coat Care

Their coat is short, dense, sleek and tight to the body. The coat is also water resistant.

The Beagle coat has very little maintenance. Brushing 2 – 3 times weekly should help keep your Beagle’s coat shiny and healthy. The Beagle is an average shedder and will require more attention during the shedding season. Bathe when necessary with a mild shampoo.
