Pug Overview

Their bloodlines can be traced to China during the Shang dynasty. Most experts believe the Pug was a predecessor of the Pekingese. Others believe they were descended from a Bulldog or small Mastiff. Pugs were first bred to provide pets to the Buddhist monasteries in Tibet. They appeared in many paintings during this era. The Pug breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1885 and grouped as Toy.

  • Color: The most recognizable color of the Pug is fawn with a black mask. Often their ears will be black as well. Other colors of this breed are white, apricot, silver and black.

Pug Temperament

The Pug breed are loyal, easy going & affectionate. This docile breed is known for being stubborn or head strong but not aggressive. They are fond of children which makes them great family pets.

Pug Health Considerations

The life expectancy is between 12 – 14 years. Pugs are relatively healthy dogs. Infection can occur between their wrinkles in their face if not properly cleaned. Other health concerns may be:

  • Overheating
  • Pharyngeal Reflex
  • Stenotic Nares
  • Epilepsy

Pug Coat

Their coat is fine, smooth, short & dense. They have single coat that is straight, not wavy.

Pugs are very heavy shedders and require regular grooming. Brushing 2 – 4 times a week is recommended. Extra attention may be needed during seasonal changes. It is also very important to pay special attention to this breeds eyes & wrinkles in their face. Cleaning those areas 2 – 4 times a week can help prevent infection.
