Havanese Overview

The Havanese originated in Cuba and was created to play with children in the 17th century. Their lineage can be traced to the European Bichon. Breeding of the Havanese in the states began in the early 70’s when a family immigrated from Cuba.
The Havanese was first registered by the AKC in 1995 and grouped as Toy.

  • Color: The Havanese can come in a multitude of colors. Some of the more recognizable are: black & white, black, white, parti color and tri-color.

Havanese Temperament

The Havanese is faithful, friendly and very playful. They are devoted and will defend their owners. This breed can also learn commands quickly & excels in obedience training. Overall the Havanese loves attention from humans and does well with children & other pets.

Havanese Health Considerations

The Havanese life expectancy is between 13 – 16 years. The Havanese is a relatively healthy breed. Some health issues to be aware of are:

  • Cataracts
  • Deafness
  • Hip Dysplasia
  • Patellar Luxation

Havanese Coat

– The Havanese coat is long, curly & wavy and soft to the touch. They have a double coat that grows out more than six inches from the body with the distinguishable trait of hair draping over their eyes.

The Havanese is hypoallergenic and for the most part do not shed. Their fine hair needs brushed daily to prevent tangling and matting. Clipping your Havanese short to the body will make grooming an easier task. Monthly bathing will help maintain a healthy coat.
