In the winter of 1807, an English ship with two Newfoundlands on board wrecked off the coast of Maryland. Everyone was saved, and the two dogs were given to a family of dog lovers. They were later mated with local retrievers including English Otter Hounds, Flat-Coated Retrievers and Curly-Coated Retrievers. Careful breeding over the years has created an outstanding retriever with incredible enthusiasm and endurance. The dogs were used to hunt waterfowl in the rough and icy waters of the Chesapeake Bay. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever has been known to retrieve hundreds of birds in a single day in frigid waters. The Lab was first recognized by the AKC in 1878 and grouped as Sporting.

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a loyal breed who are gentle with children and great with their families. They are good swimmers and hard workers. This breed is very aware of their surroundings and can be a bit wary of strangers.

Chesapeake Bay Retriever Coat
Their coat should be thick with a harsh, oily outer coat and a dense, fine undercoat.
Their coat should be brushed with a firm bristle brush 2 – 3 times a month. The Lab is an average shedder and has a water proof coat that can for the most part self-clean itself.
