The Akita dog breed is a Japanese breed that dates back to the 17th century. Because of their strong necks, Akitas were originally bred as hunting dogs, and were used for bear, boar, and deer hunting. They are also known for their loyalty and courage. In the early 1900s, the Akita was brought to the United States, where they became popular as pets and working dogs. Today, the Akita is still used as a hunting dog in Japan and is also a popular companion dog in many parts of the world.

Akitas are a large and powerful dog breed with a noble and dignified demeanor. Though they are independent and sometimes stubborn, they are also incredibly loyal and protective, making them excellent guard dogs. This breed is relatively new to the United States, but it has quickly become popular as both a companion animal and show dog. They are a versatile breed that can do well in a variety of households, though they may not be the best fit for first-time dog owners. If you are considering adding an Akita to your family, be prepared to provide plenty of exercise, socialization, and training. With the proper care, an Akita can be a loving and loyal companion for many years to come.

The AKC recognized the Akita in 1955, and the re-classified them as a Working breed in 1972.

Akita Puppies Temperament

Many people are drawn to the Akita dog breed because of their loyalty and protective nature. However, it’s important to be aware of Akita’s temperament before making the commitment to purchase one.

The Akita breed is legendarily loyal and forms strong bonds with his owner. They are loving and protective of their families and can be aggressive towards strangers. While Akitas are not typically aggressive towards children, they may be too boisterous for very young kids. With early socialization and training, however, they can learn to get along with other people and animals.

Akitas are incredibly intelligent and have a strong will of their own. They are known for being independent and stubborn, which can make training a challenge. These pups need experienced owners who are willing to put in the time and effort to train them properly. Without proper leadership, Akitas can become willful and headstrong. However, with the right owner, they can be very obedient and eager to please.

An Akita loves outdoor play and comes alive in cold weather. This mountain dog loves snow and winter weather but can struggle a bit in the heat, so watch for overheating. To keep this highly physical canine calm and centered, regular, vigorous outdoor exercise is essential.

While an Akita may not be the best dog breed for first-time dog owners, they can make wonderful pets for experienced dog owners.

Akita Puppies Health Considerations

Though generally very healthy and long-lived — with an average lifespan of around 10 to 12 years — our Akitas for sale are not without their unique health concerns. Like every breed of dog, there are a few conditions you should be aware of before you consider purchasing one of our Akita puppies for sale. Understanding the risks allows you to know the signs and prevent small health concerns from turning into big ones. Akita puppies are at somewhat elevated risk for developing the following conditions:

  •    Hip Dysplasia
  •    Elbow Dysplasia
  •    Eye Conditions such as Cataracts & PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy)

Another common concern in Akitas is allergies. Many Akitas suffer from allergies to environmental factors such as pollen or dust mites. This can cause symptoms such as itching, redness, and hair loss. If your Akita puppy is showing any signs of allergies, consult your vet for advice on how to best manage the condition.

Finding an Akita puppy for sale from a reputable breeder can dramatically — although, not eliminate — the risk of your dog developing some of these conditions. At Keystone Puppies, we work exclusively with experienced breeders who are committed to producing healthy & happy pups. Akita Puppies Coat & Coat Care

Akitas are known for their thick, dense coats, which can range in color from white to brindle. The thick coat helps to protect the Akita from cold weather and provides insulation against heat. This breed does not have an undercoat, so its coat does not require as much care as some other breeds. However, the coat does require regular brushing to prevent matting and tangling.

It is normal for Akitas to shed heavily twice a year, so daily brushing during these periods is essential. Taking care of an Akita’s coat is important not only for maintaining the health of the dog, but also for preserving the beautiful appearance of this regal breed.
