History of the Lapdog

Lapdogs have an incredibly long history. Lapdogs show up in ancient writings and art as early as 2,000 BC when the tiny Maltese breed was documented on the Italian island of Malta. The Pekingese has been traced back as 2,000 years in China.  Chihuahuas have an uncertain history, but evidence of Chihuahuas can found in Mexico as far as ancient Mayan times.

The Dog of Kings

Until recent times, being able to afford a non-working dog as a companion was a luxury that few could afford. Perhaps this is why these small dogs were known as palace dogs, the dogs of kings, or the dogs of nobility for much of history. Legend says aristocratic owners used lapdogs to keep warm in chilly castles. Renaissance France called Miniature Poodles “sleeve dogs” because they traveled with their owners perched in the large sleeves popular at the time. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel even has King in its name and is descended from the special breed of lap dogs made famous in paintings of nobility in the time of King Charles II.

For hundreds of years, the Japanese were especially strict about dog ownership, and only noble blood could own the Japanese Chin. The Coton de Tulear is known as the “royal dog of Madagascar,” because it was favored by the ruling monarchy in Madagascar since the 1700s.

Pugs are a popular lapdog and were documented by Confucius as early as 551 B.C. Pugs were prized possessions of Chinese emperors for centuries.  Shih Tzus have also been portrayed in Chinese art for hundreds of years and were famous for being carefully bred by China’s Dowager Empress Tzu in the 1800s.

The History of Very Small Dogs

Like many of the unusual breeds in the canine worlds, toy dogs were initially bred to be pets of nobility or aristocracy. Since ancient times, the rich and powerful have been obsessed with the tiniest of pups. Some breeds were so prized (and expensive) that they could only be owned by royalty.

The Pekingese is such a breed. Ancestors of this breed have been traced back 2,000 years, and at some points in history, illegal possession of a Pekingese could be punished by death. However, in the 1800s dogs were traded or smuggled out of China, and their popularity has grown ever since. Pugs were similarly prized by (and restricted to) Chinese aristocracy.

Small dogs played multiple roles in court. Toy poodles were known as “sleeve dogs” in the 17^th century because French aristocrats carried them around in billowing sleeves for warmth. Shih Tzus were bred to be lovable guard dogs, warning their noble masters of people listening to doors or hiding around corners.

Other breeds of dogs were bred for small size for more practical reasons. The Terriers were bred over the past few centuries to be small and nimble enough to burrow into the ground after rodents. Some theorized that even ancient lap dogs breeds like the Maltese were bred small to make them good rodent hunters but breeding for appearance eliminated these traits over time.

For other breeds, like the Chihuahua, the reason for their small stature is lost. Chihuahuas and their tiny predecessors appear to date back to Mayan times, and little is known about their origin or their original purpose.

Herders have an athletic build, lots of energy, and the type of hardy coats that allow them to work outdoors in rain, shine, sleet, or snow. Herding breeds are also exceptionally loyal, like to follow their master, protective of their family, and since they are very eager to please, they are usually easy to train.

The History of Herders

Dogs that guarded livestock, the predecessors to true herders, start showing up as early as 9,000 B.C. and are recognized as herding specialists around 4,000 B.C. Around 1600, references to shepherd dogs start appearing. While we may think of herding dogs as sprightly collies, in other parts of the word burlier herding breeds did double duty warding off wild animals. There have been different breeds of herding dogs in almost every country in the world for centuries, varying in size, speed, and talents. We’ll examine some of them here.

Herding Breeds

Akbash

The loyal Akbash Dog was bred to protect his family and his herd. These white herding dogs were bred to watch flocks without much supervision, and as a result are rather independent The Akbash is a Turkish breed that has been around for centuries but is still not recognized by the American Kennel Club. This high energy pup needs lots of outdoor exercise and is not a good choice for a docile companion dog.

Anatolian Shepherd

The Anatolian Shepherd is an ancient herding and guardian dog that has been around for more than 6,000 years. This ancient Turkish breed is exceptionally strong and fast and was bred to work independently. Because it needs lots of vigorous outdoor exercise, this breed is best for homes with large yards and active owners. The American Kennel Club recognized the Anatolian Shephard in 1999.

Australian Cattle Dog – Blue Heeler

The Australian Cattle Dog breed was developed in Australia to help herd cattle and sheep. Their lineage is complicated, and it’s believed they were developed from a mix of a Collie breed, Dalmatians, Bull Terriers, and wild Dingos. This robust breed needs daily vigorous exercise and is best suited for active owners with lots of outdoor space. The Blue Heeler was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1980.

Australian Shepherd

The history of the Australian Shepherd is unclear. Versions of this dog probably existing in Spain and Australia, but they came into their own when they were shipped with Australian sheep to California during the Gold Rush in the 1850s. America claimed this breed as their own, and the breed became associated with cowboys in the West. The Australian Shepherd has become popular in recent years being used as therapy dogs, service dogs, and search and rescue dogs. This breed was recognized by the AKC in 1991.

Border Collie

The Border Collie was originally bred in Scotland but was developed as a popular breed in Australia. This highly intelligent and agile pup is not only an excellent herding dog, but it is also a loyal and protective family dog, and excellent with children. Like most herders, the Border Collie needs lots of vigorous exercise and is an enthusiastic barker. The Border Collie accepting into the AKC in 1995.

Cane Corso

The Cane Corso was bred to herd large livestock such as cattle and swine. Its strength, fierce appearance, and stamina also made it a popular choice for boar hunting and bear fighting. While almost extinct in the 1970s, this blue-eyed breed has bounced back. This gentle giant is loyal and loving to its family, but is also very protective of its owner, and is wary of strangers. While the Cane Corso needs lots of outdoor exercise, it is not quite as energetic as Australian Shepherds or Border Collies. This breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 2010.

Collie

The Collie is a Scottish dog bred for herding sheep in cold climates. Collies are still popular farm dogs that are loyal, eager to please, intelligent, and easy to train.  Collies have strong herding instincts and may try to move children and other pets by chasing and nipping at heels. They love to bark, and like most herding dogs, they need lots of outdoor exercise to stay calm and centered. This breed was first registered by the American Kennel Club in 1885.

German Shepherd

The German Shepherd is one of the most popular breeds in the United States. This herder was first bred in Germany during the 1800’s as a working and herding dog, but its size, stance, and obedience made it a good choice as a military dog. German Shepherds have a long history as an American and European battlefield dog. Today, they are the most popular choice for American K-9 units and are often utilized for drug detection, and search and rescue. They are also often used as therapy and service dogs. These loyal pups also make gentle and obedient family pets, although they can be very protective of owners and wary of strangers.  These dogs need daily exercise and don’t like to be left alone for long periods, but require less vigorous exercise than other herding breeds. The German Shepherd was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1908.

Rottweiler

While Rottweilers sometimes have the reputation of being a fierce guard dog, Rottweilers are considered one of the oldest herding breeds. Historians believe that Rottweilers are descended from drover dogs used for herding by the Romans. These intelligent, loyal dogs have been used as guard dogs and police dogs, but they are also gentle and loyal with their family, and good with kids. They need moderate outdoor exercise but should be exercised daily. The Rottweiler breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1931.

Samoyed

This fluffy, white dog is famous for its “smile,” But this happy-looking pup is also a hard worker. The Samoyed breed was named after a Siberian tribe and was originally used to herd reindeer in the Arctic. This gentle breed is a good herder, but lacks hunting instincts, making it a gentle and loyal family pet. The Samoyed loves children and is a good barking watchdog, but lacks the aggression to be a guard dog. This breed needs daily outdoor exercise to stay calm and centered. The Samoyed was first registered by the American Kennel Club in 1906.

Shetland Sheepdog

The Shetland Sheepdog, or Sheltie, is named for the Shetland Islands off the coast of Scotland. Like the Collie, Australian Shepherd, and Border Collie, the Shetland Sheepdog is very intelligent, agile and loyal. They love children, but also like to chase and herd, sometimes nipping at heels. These puppies also need lots of vigorous outdoor exercise and are best for owners with large yards or lots of outdoor space. The Sheltie was first registered by the AKC in 1911.

Welsh Corgi – Pembroke

The Welsh Corgi can be traced back to the 1100s when they were bred for herding sheep and cattle. Although they are short, they are also very fast and agile, and herd by nipping. These stout companions love children and other dogs. They are intelligent, loyal, and eager to please, which makes them easy to train. They need a moderate amount of daily outdoor exercise and are less energetic than some other herding breeds. The Welsh Corgi-Pembroke breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1934.

The Terrier group is a relatively recent addition to the dog world. Like many breed groups, this set of pups was bred for a specific set of tasks. In this case, Terriers were bred to control pests and vermin. All kinds of Terriers start appearing in the British Isles during the eighteenth century. Many Terriers are named after the areas on the British Isles where they were originally bred, such as Yorkshire, West Highlands, and Airedale.

The breeds in the Terrier group were selected for energy, ability to dig, and for their enthusiasm for chasing and killing mice, rats, moles, and even badgers and foxes. In fact, even their name, derived from the Latin root “terra,” or earth, hints at their special ability to “go to ground.”

Terriers were originally bred as farm dogs. These pups spent time in family homes, but also lived and worked in barns, mills, mines, outdoors, and even on riverbanks. They like to be outdoors, and many have thick coats appropriate to the chilly, wet British climate. Their sizes range from the tiny Yorkshire Terrier to the larger Airedale and Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers.

While each breed is a little different, Terriers as a group have a reputation for being high-energy and stubborn, which means owners must be persistent and determined in order to develop a well-trained pup. In the late nineteenth-century new Terrier breeds were developed that were not a part of the original breed group. The Pit Bull Terrier resulted from breeding  Bulldogs and Terriers. The Boston Terrier is another Bulldog/Terrier hybrid. These “second-generation” Terriers retain much of the spirit and feistiness of the group and have captured the hearts of many dog owners.

Here’s an overview of some of the most popular Terriers in the United States.

Airedale Terrier

The Airedale Terrier is the largest Terrier and was bred to control pests in the Aire River Valley in Yorkshire, England. Airedales specialized in digging into river banks to find the burrows of pests such as rats, martins, otters, and foxes.

Airedales have also been used as sporting dogs. This breed is friendly and good with kids. Unlike many breeds in the Terrier group, Airedales are relatively easy to train, but they need a lot of room to roam or they can get restless or destructive. Their coat needs special care, including coat stripping, or their fur may begin to appear mangy or unkempt.

Miniature Schnauzer

While the larger Schnauzer breed goes back to the 1400’s, the Mini Schnauzer was first bred in the nineteenth-century. These Germanic pups are one of the few Terriers to originate off the British Isles.

Like most Terriers, these energetic dogs need lots of vigorous outdoor exercise, or they may engage in destructive behavior. While Mini Schnauzers are spirited and playful, they’re also stubborn and need a knowledgeable handler to train them. Finally, this lovable puppy’s coat needs a lot of care, including coat stripping.

Cairn Terrier

The spunky, little Cairn Terrier may have been bred in Scotland, but it will always be best known as the tiny dog from Kansas in The Wizard of Oz. Like most Terriers, Cairns were bred to control rat populations, as well as to serve as pest control for foxes, rabbits and even badgers.

This intelligent pup is courageous and outgoing. They are good with kids, and, like most Terriers, these puppies need lots of walks and exercise to keep them calm and centered. They can be stubborn, so thorough training will require determination.

Fox Terrier – Toy

The small Toy Fox Terriers were used on farms to control pests and vermin, but because of their size and speed, they also became popular hunting dogs for small game such as rabbit. This Terrier is naturally obedient and easy to train. Their obliging nature, combined with bright, expressive faces also made them a popular choice for circuses.

Today their size and speed make them a natural candidate for agility competitions. The Toy Fox Terrier is a friendly pup that does well with kids and strangers. They are easy to groom. However, like most Terriers, they are energetic and need lots of outdoor exercises, or they can get skittish and bark excessively.

Jack Russell Terrier

The Jack Russell Terrier was named after the man who developed the breed. The Reverend John “Jack” Russell was a nineteenth-century English parson who also loved dogs and fox hunting. In fact, the Jack Russell Terrier is sometimes called the Parson Russell Terrier.

These pups have short coats that are easy to groom. They are exceptionally energetic and like to run in full-speed bursts, so large yards or frequent visits to a dog run are needed. Without plenty of exercise, they can engage in destructive, boredom-based behaviors. They are eager to please and are easier to train than many Terrier breeds.

Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier

Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers are the native dogs of Ireland. The farmers of Claire, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, and Waterford counties used these Terriers to control vermin but also used them as a family guard dog, to work cattle, and to hunt. While the Wheaten has been in Ireland for centuries, this pup is a recent immigrant to the United States, with the first dogs arriving in the 1940s.

Wheatens are friendly, like children, and can get lonely if left alone for long. While they need daily exercise, they are not as high-energy as many other Terrier breeds. Their shaggy coat needs regular grooming. Like many Terriers, they are stubborn, so training requires determination.

West Highland Terrier

West Highland Terrier lore reports that after a reddish dog was mistakenly shot for a fox, the breed was developed to produce only white dogs so that they be easily spotted among vermin or game.

This confident, spirited breed is a highly social puppy and a natural entertainer. They are also known for a signature cock of the head, that often gives them a bemused or quizzical look. These small pups are good choices for apartments, but they need daily walks. They are friendly and like kids. They need regular grooming to maintain the gloss and color of their pristine white coats. Unlike many Terriers, the Westie is eager to please and relatively easy to train.

Yorkshire Terrier

The silky Yorkshire Terrier was known by a few different names before Yorkshire claimed them as their own in 1874.  Yorkies were bred small to fit into nooks and cracks in mines and mill buildings in 19^th-century Britain. Hunters liked to carry the small Yorkies in their pockets to help them hunt down rabbits, foxes, and even badgers. Since the small pups needed to face off with larger animals, courage became an important trait in the breed. Feisty Yorkies are loving and loyal, but wary of strangers. They can be aggressive with larger dogs and other animals. Their unusual, silky coat needs regular grooming. These high-energy dogs love to play and need daily walks. Like many Terriers, they have a stubborn streak that makes training more challenging.

Second-Generation Terriers

These “second-generation” Terriers were bred to retain the Terriers’ feisty disposition and combine it with attributes from other breeds. While these pups are called Terriers, they differ from the core group in appearance and temperament

Boston Terriers

The Boston Terrier has a gentle, spritely personality. This pup was developed as a result of intensive selective breeding between the White English Terrier and the English Bulldog. As its name implies, it is an American breed and was added to the breed list of the American Kennel Club as a non-sporting breed in 1893.

Boston Terriers love children and are devoted pets. They are loyal and wary of strangers, making them a good watchdog breed. Like most Terriers, they can be stubborn and require a knowledgeable trainer.

The American Pit Bull Terrier

The Pit Bull Terrier was originally developed from Bulldogs and Terriers to fight other animals and dogs. This history has earned the breed a reputation as aggressive dogs and made Pit Bulls a popular choice as a watchdog.

However, this dog’s loyalty and love for people, especially children, make this breed a great choice as a companion pup. The Pit Bull Terrier is generally healthy and easy to groom. They are intelligent puppies that are easy to train, but that also like to chew.

Some of the most popular breeds around today were bred to live and work in cold climates covered in snow. While many Americans associate snow breeds with Alaska, these winter-loving pups also come from Siberia, Japan, the Himalayas, the Alps, and even Turkey.

All snow breeds share a thick double coat that insulates and keeps them warm in the coldest weather. Healthy snow breeds usually have a layer of fat under their coat. Their undercoats are short and warm, while the overcoats are long and repel water. Many have piercing, almond-shaped eyes that are perfect for squinting to keep out snow.

Since most snow breeds were originally working dogs, these puppies crave vigorous outdoor exercise. They have thick skin on their paw pads and many breeds have long fur that covers the paws, so icy terrains aren’t a problem. These dogs love chilly walks and adore playing in deep, fluffy snow. It’s not usual to see snow breeds burrow into a snow bank and bury their heads and shoulders into the white flakes.

The American Eskimo Dog

This snow breed got an image makeover after World War II. They were originally called White German Spitzs but were renamed the American Eskimo Dog because of their white coat and love of cold weather – not for any association with Eskimo tribes. A thick undercoat keeps their bodies and perky ears warm in the winter. These fun-loving, loyal dogs also make great family dogs.

The Anatolian Shepherd 

Anatolian Shepherds have been guarding flocks in Turkey for more than 6,000 years ago. These rugged mountain dogs have the double coat needed to weather winter storms, and the stamina to travel miles at a time. Like many shepherd breeds, Anatolian Shepherds are independent and protective. They need an experienced trainer who is able to manage their herding and guarding instincts.

The Bernese Mountain Dog

These large, lumbering canines are gentle and need little exercise. But they’re also strong, fast, and agile. These puppies have Swiss roots and were used to pull carts. Bernese Mountain Dogs love cold weather, do well with other dogs, and make loyal family pets.

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever

The Chow Chow

The German Shepherd

German Shepherds are one of the most widely-recognized breeds in America. These puppies love outdoor work and are often used for farm work, guard work, and as a police dog. These energic pups are smart and learn quickly. However, German Shepherds are very protective, and a good trainer is needed to control their guarding instincts.

The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog

The Newfoundland

The Norwegian Elkhound

The Siberian Husky

Siberian Huskies really do originate in Siberia in Northeast Asia. They are popular sled dogs prized for their distinctive markings and their striking eye color, often different in each eye. Because these snow breeds were developed as sled dogs, they need a great deal of vigorous outdoor exercise to stay happy, healthy, and calm. Although Huskies prefer to be outdoor dogs, they are also loyal to their family and do well with children.

The Tibetan Mastiff

Tibetan Mastiffs were bred in the heights of the Himalayas in Tibet, where they were guard dogs for the herd, palaces, and monasteries. Tibetan Mastiffs’ dense double coats keep them warm and dry in the coldest winter weather and make it harder for them to tolerate heat. These pups need an experienced trainer and lots of outdoor exercise to stay happy and healthy. They love children and families and are intensely loyal.

While looks are important, there are even more critical elements to consider when choosing a puppy. These factors will determine each pup’s long-term suitability with your home, your friends and family, and your lifestyle.

Factor One: How Much Exercise Will This Pup Need?

Meeting a puppy’s exercise needs is one of the most effective ways of avoiding undesirable behaviors. Dog’s exercise requirements vary widely. Shih Tzus are content with short walks and occasional romps, while Border Collies were bred as herding dogs and need time every day for running and vigorous play. Dogs that are deprived of adequate exercise can chew household items, dig indoors, chase and nips people, or even behave aggressively.

That’s why it’s so important to research the breed of your dog or the breeds that contributed to your pup and make sure you have room in your home and yard for the appropriate activity levels. If you want to bring an active puppy into your life, make sure you have time to take him on long daily walks, play fetch, or to visit a dog run.

If you’re unable to spend lots of time exercising your dog, then it’s wise to choose a breed that requires less activity. For example, smaller dogs usually need less exercise than larger breeds. Terriers typically need more exercise than lap dogs.

Factor Two: What is This Puppy’s Temperament?

Many breeds of dogs have been bred to display a particular temperament. For example, as discussed in our blog, Hunters and Hounds, hunting dogs were bred to be useful in group outings with many people and lots of dogs. That explains why they were bred for selected traits such as welcoming new people, getting along well with other dogs, and being loyal to their master. As a result, most hunting breeds display some level of these qualities. Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers are two of the most popular breeds in America because of these people-friendly traits.

Other pups, like Chow Chows, Shih Tzus, and Shiba Inus were bred to be watchdogs. These pups are alert, intelligent, and territorial, which combine to make them excellent guardians of people and property.

Still, others were bred to be snuggly companion dogs. If you want a puppy that is affectionate, likes to lie on your lap, and adores a good cuddle, you may want to consider a breed like a Maltese, a Bichon Frise, or a Chihuahua.

If you’re considering a designer breed (a breed that is an intentional mix of two established breeds) study the temperaments of both parents. Many designer breeds have established personality characteristics. For example, Cockapoos, a mix between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle, are identified as intelligent, active, and quick to learn. Schnoodles, a mix between a Mini Schnauzer and a Mini Poodle, are lively, intelligent, and affectionate. Remember that breed temperaments are based on averages, and that each puppy is an individual. Some dog’s temperaments may vary from the breed norm.

Factor Three: What are the Companionship Needs of This Puppy?

What are your dog’s social and emotional needs? Lonely dogs will bay, bark, howl, and destroy property. On the other end of the spectrum, dogs that are overwhelmed by new people or groups may growl, nip, bite, or act out in other ways. It’s important to know how your breed will interact with you, your visitors, and other pets.

Once again, different breeds, and breed types, were bred to bring forward different emotional and social tendencies. Lap dogs such as Pomeranians and Pugs are usually very attached to owners and get lonely easily. Working dogs like Bernese Mountain Dogs, Cane Corsos, and Newfoundlands were often bred to be more independent. These breeds were often farm dogs that slept in barns. They’re usually more comfortable with owners being gone for longer periods of time.

Research your breed, or your mix of breeds, and make sure you choose a dog that will be comfortable with your lifestyle and your absences. If you must travel regularly, choose a dog that is comfortable spending time away from his owner, or is very social with other dogs and doesn’t mind boarding in kennels. Conversely, if you have a household that is often filled with family or guests, don’t choose a reserved dog that is wary of strangers.

Factor Four: What Kind of Grooming Will This Dog Require?

Some dog owners love grooming their pup. They enjoy combing out the coats, bathing, and even styling their dog’s fur or hair. Other dog owners prefer a “wash and wear” approach, with very little brushing or grooming involved.

When factoring the time you will need to spend on grooming your puppy, hair length is key. Shorthaired dogs like Beagles and Dobermans need very little grooming and no trimming. Dogs with shaggy coats, like American Eskimo Dogs and dogs with wiry coats, like Airedales and West Highland Terriers, need special care with specific types of brushing to keep their coats healthy.

Other grooming considerations are teeth, ears, paws, and eye care. Some breeds require diligent maintenance of these areas. Other breeds require almost none.

Shedding is another concern for new dog owners. The assumption is that short-haired dogs won’t shed as much, but rarely true. Shedding has little to do with hair length. Most dogs shed to some degree, and short haired dogs can shed as much as long-haired pups. Conscientious grooming and coat care will dramatically reduce shedding on almost any type of dog.

Factor Five: How Large Will This Pup Grow?

Little puppies are irresistible, but they will quickly grow into dogs. That’s why you need to understand exactly how large that dog will become, food needs, and adult energy levels.

When thinking about dog size, It’s important to remember that dog size has very little correlation to aggression or personality. Many large breeds are famously sweet and loving, while some tiny dogs are possessive and like to nip. Don’t assume that size and temperament have any correlation.

However, size does matter when it comes to fitting a dog into your home. Size-wise, it’s undeniably easier to find a place in your home for a small dog such as a Yorkshire Terrier. His bed and food bowls fit into almost any corner. However, creating sleeping and feeding areas for large breeds like Great Danes can take more planning.

If you have young children, you may want to look for medium-sized dogs. Small breeds can be easily injured by children who are not yet able to manage gentle handling. Conversely, it’s common for very large dogs to accidentally push babies and toddlers aside or hit them with a wagging tail.

You’ve heard the names – Labradoodles, Cockapoos, Goldendoodles, Schnoodles – it seems like everyone is crazy for Poodle-inspired puppy breeds these days. Why are Doodles and ‘Poos so popular?

It’s no surprise Americans love Poodles and the breeds that mix with Poodles. After all, Poodles have been popular in America since pre-revolutionary days. Poodles originated in Europe, probably in Germany, as a water dog. It may have been a mix with the Spanish water dog (known then as the Spaniel) and German hunting hounds.

Although the history of the Poodle is murky, we do know that the Poodle as we know it began showing up in paintings in the 1500s, and became a favorite with French nobility in the 1600s. The French bred small Poodles as companion dogs, favored in the French court. Small Poodles were often called “sleeve dogs” because noblewomen liked to carry them in their large bell sleeves for warmth.

Although Mini and Toy Poodles are still great companion dogs, and Standard Poodles are still excellent hunting dogs, the characteristics that have made Poodles such a popular part of designer breeds are their non-shedding hair and their wide range of sizes.

Poodles’ distinctive coats are actually non-shedding hair, instead of the fur found on most canine breeds. This unusual coat does not set off allergies in many people, even those with dog allergies. However, it’s important to note that no dog breed is truly hypoallergenic, and hybrids and designer breeds may or may not retain all of the coat qualities of it. If you’re considering a Doodle or a ‘Poo as a solution to allergies, have the pup’s coat tested before making your decision.

The Poodle’s second desirable trait is size. Or should we say sizes? Three Poodle breeds are recognized by the American Kennel Club – Standard, Miniature, and Toy. The Standard Poodle weighs about 50-70 pounds as an adult. A Miniature Poodle weighs about 10-15 pounds, while a Toy Poodle weighs a mere 4-6 pounds.

The coat, combined with the wide range in sizes, means that these dogs breed easily with a variety of other breeds, often resulting in a designer breed with little or no dander or fur, an attractive curly coat, and as well as many physical and behavioral attributes of the other breed.

While many Poodle breeders disapprove of the new generations of Doodle and ‘Poo breeds, claiming that these breeds are not held to the American Kennel Club’s breed standard, other dog-lovers claim that mixing bloodlines can result in a healthier and more balanced pet, and mixed breeds often bring the best traits of two dog parents together.

This is the granddaddy of all Doodles. Labradoodles tend to combine the broader build of a Labrador with the springy Standard Poodle coat. The original breeder was adamant that, although many Labradoodles are hypoallergenic, not all Labradoodles are suited for homes with allergies. The Labradoodle is recognized by the ACHC (American Canine Hybrid Club) and can be registered through IDCR (International Designer Canine Registry) and ICA (International Canine Association, Inc). The Labradoodle is intelligent, active and fun loving. They generally love the outdoors and enjoy playing fetch with their owners. Labradoodles are easily trainable and are one of the most popular cross breeds in America. This designer breed loves affection and does well with children and other dogs.

AussieDoodle

The Aussiedoodle is a large designer breed created through the cross of the Australian Shepherd and the Standard Poodle breed. The Aussiedoodle is recognized by the ACHC (American Canine Hybrid Club). This designer breed can also be registered through IDCR (International Designer Canine Registry) and ICA (International Canine Association, Inc). The Aussiedoodle puppy is intelligent, affectionate and highly excitable.

Bernedoodle

The large Bernedoodle is a designer breed created through the cross of the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Standard Poodle breed. The Bernedoodle is recognized by the ACHC (American Canine Hybrid Club). This designer breed can also be registered through IDCR (International Designer Canine Registry) and ICA (International Canine Association, Inc). The Bernedoodle is a highly intelligent breed who is very docile and loving. This breed will make a great family pet as they are great with children and other pets.

Bichpoo

The tiny Bichipoo is a designer breed created through the cross of the Bichon Frise and the Toy or Mini Poodle breed. The Bichpoo is recognized by the ACHC (American Canine Hybrid Club) as a Poochon. When looking for a dog that fits into your family, breed traits are a great place to start, but it’s also important to consider the age of your children. For example, many larger breeds, like Saint Bernards and Bernese Mountain Dogs are big enough to be tolerant of the inevitable pokes and pulls that come from small children. Others breeds, especially smaller breeds like Pugs and Chihuahuas, are more suited to older children who are able to treat dogs more gently.

While you may be prepared to spend time training a new dog, you will also have to make time to teach your children how to treat your canine pal. That will require extra supervision and training time during the first several months.  And it’s important to remember that dogs and babies and toddlers should never be left alone together, no matter how gentle the dog. 10 Kid-Friendly Dog Breeds

The American Eskimo Dog

The American Eskimo Dog, or Eskie, is a happy, active, and intelligent breed. They love kids, and they usually form strong, loyal attachments to the children in the home. However, that attachment means they also get sad or lonely when their favorite family members are gone for long periods of time.

Eskies need lots of exercise, so they do well in homes with fenced-in yards or with owners who like to walk, jog, or hike. Without adequate exercise, they become bored and may bark or chew excessively.  This intelligent breed also needs a family with strong leaders and consistent training. They like learning commands and are eager to please.

Finally, this breed has strong hunting instincts. They may not match well with a home with smaller pets such as hamsters or birds. Their instincts are also like to compel them to find and chew plush toys, so keep stuffed toys well out of reach.

Collies and Border Collies

Collies and Border Collies were originally bred as herding dogs, but their devoted, obedient nature also makes them a good fit for families with children. Collies are affectionate with kids, and love being around their families.

As herders, Collies and Border Collies were bred to run and chase. You’ll find them exceptionally eager to chase children as they noisily run and play, and sometimes harmlessly nip at their heels as their herding instincts kick in. But these breeds are also very protective of children, sometimes even protecting them from an angry parent by growling.

These smart puppies need lots of mental and physical stimulation. Give them lots of outdoor exercise. They tend to be good fetchers and like to play with balls. They also enjoy training and following commands. If well-trained, these breeds have been known to respond to hundreds of specific commands.

Newfoundlands

As anyone who has ever seen the movie, “Peter Pan” knows, Newfoundlands are often called “the nanny dog.” These sweet-tempered puppies are patient and loving with children, and often take on a maternal or paternal role, protecting children from perceived threats or dangers, and also physically nudging, licking, and drooling.

While the Newfoundland is not a watchdog, he will protect his family from strangers and may growl or bark at people he believes are threats.

It’s also important to know that Newfoundland puppies grow into very big dogs – males can exceed 150 pounds. These large dogs are gentle and tolerant of children’s roughhousing, but they also need a fair amount of space and exercise. If you’re in a small apartment, this breed might not be for you.

Vizslas

The Viszla has been a prized hunting breed in Eastern Europe for centuries. But in recent decades, more and more Americans have fallen in love with this gentle, affectionate puppy.

Viszlas are large, trim dogs that enjoy lots of outdoor exercise. They’re smart and will follow the commands of a strong and consistent trainer. Young Viszlas are exuberant and have a tendency to romp and bounce, sometimes knocking over nearby people or objects.

Viszlas form tight bonds with children and adults and hate to be left alone. They will follow owners through the house. Although they’re not small dogs, they like to snuggle with young and old humans and, without training, often push their way onto your lap.

Irish Setters

Irish Setters are famous for their happy dispositions, and are often described as “merry.” This playful, mischievous breed likes to play, romp, and bounce and needs an energetic owner that can provide lots of active, outdoor play.

Irish Setters love playing with children but can get overexcited and jump or paw, so it’s important to supervise when they’re with children. Irish Setters can become highly-trained dogs, but their sometimes stubborn nature means a consistent, focused training effort is needed for best results.

Irish Setters are also curious, even nosy, and want to explore and root through new findings. You may want to keep children’s toys, especially plush toys, behind closed doors, in closed cabinets, or out of reach.

Poodles

Standard Poodles are popular because they’re very intelligent and easy to train. And they are hypoallergenic, which means that they won’t aggravate most allergies. Poodles are fun-loving, family dogs who love play and lots of activity.

Like many friendly, intelligent breeds, Poodles get bored easily. They do well with lots of people, and plenty of exercise and attention. Large yards are great, but Poodles are known to be fence jumpers, so keep an eye on them.

Mini Poodles and Toy Poodles are also intelligent and easy to train, but because of their smaller size, they are not always a perfect fit for families with very small children.

Labrador Retrievers

The Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular family dogs. These canines are gentle, good-natured, and like the attention of children of all ages. They are usually tolerant of some tugging and pulling from tiny tots.

Labradors were bred as a hunting dog, which means they need lots of vigorous exercise like runs, romping, playing fetch, and even swimming. Short walks won’t be enough for this boisterous breed.

Labrador Retrievers do well with large family and take guests and large gatherings in stride. They’ll usually warm to people who show them a bit of attention or, better yet, are willing to play with them.

Labrador Retrievers have strong necks, and it may require a strong handler to keep them in check while on a leash. They need consistent training or they can become stubborn. And like most hunting dogs, they have chewing instincts for small animals, or anything that resembles a small animal. Keep plush toys and feather boas stowed away.

Golden Retrievers

Golden Retrievers are one of the most popular family pets in America. No wonder. This intelligent breed is almost always even-tempered and affectionate. Golden Retrievers love playing with children and are usually gentle in their play. The affable Golden Retriever usually enjoys interacting with other pets and guests. They do well at large gatherings and quickly warm to people who play with them or give them attention.

Golden Retrievers are eager to please, which makes them easy to train. These smart dogs also like to help out in the family home, so take time to train your dog well in fetching and retrieving.

Beagles

Boxers

Boxers have been one of the most popular breeds in the United States for decades. These handsome, stately pups look serious and a little intimidating, but they’re actually intelligent and playful. They are extremely loyal to their family and owner and will guard them against strangers.

Boxers can do well with other animals if they are raised with them but can be aggressive with other family’s pets. So don’t allow your Boxer to wander, keep him leashed outside of the home, and don’t assume that he’ll like other new pets just because he gets along with your other pets at home.

Boxers need lots of exercise and attention. They can become destructive if they get bored or lonely. They don’t do well in heat, so limit exercise to early morning and late evening in summer months.

French Bulldogs

The friendly French Bulldog combines loyalty, an even disposition, and a playful nature. They are good with children and, because of their strong, compact build, are usually tolerant of the inevitable tugs and pulls from small children.

Many families are charmed by this breeds love of frisky play French Bulldogs love to romp and chase but don’t need lots of vigorous exercise. A few short walks per day may suffice.

Unlike many dogs, French Bulldogs can’t swim, so keep them away from the water they can’t stand in, and never leave them alone by pools, lakes or rivers.

While breed traits are a good indicator of future behaviors, exceptions exist, and all dogs should be treated with love and care for best results. Hunting Hounds Breeds

While the early history of hunting dogs is not well-documented, it seems that hounds were probably one of the first types of hunting dogs. These pups were bred to develop an excellent sense of smell to track prey.

There are many hound breeds. Some breeds, like the Basset Hound, are laid-back and don’t crave as much physical exertion. Others, like the Beagle and the Redbone Coonhound Mix, were bred to track game for many miles. These energetic breeds want lots of daily exercise.

All hounds tend to engage in loud baying or howling that neighbors can easily hear. It’s best to place hounds with owners that can allow them to indulge their natural instincts without annoying the neighbors.

While almost all canines have excellent smell, hounds have an even more refined sense of smell. That means that they need to sniff and that they will find many scents irresistible. They’re more likely than some breeds to sniff out snacks, run off with smelly socks (and underwear), and wander off in search of an interesting smell.

Hunting Pointer and Setter Breeds 

Pointers and setters were bred to stand still, or “freeze” when detecting game. Pointers use their nose and paw to point, while setters crouch, or “set” when game is detected. While famous for finding game, these breeds can also be trained to flush out their quarry and retrieve dead prey. Pointers and setters tend to be good-natured, friendly dogs that do well with children. Like most hunting breeds, they need lots of outdoor exercise to remain content.

German Shorthair Pointers, Irish Setters, Vizlas, and Weimaraners are all classified as pointer and setter breeds, but there are differences among them.

Most notably, Weimaraners have a reputation for being headstrong. They’re highly intelligent and need a strong leader to keep them calm and centered. With focused training and consistent discipline, they can be a good hunter and a wonderful family pet.

All pointer and setter breeds like to nip, chew, and play-bite (a soft, painless bite that doesn’t break skin.) These breeds need a regular supply of chew toys. You may need to teach them which items are okay to chew, and which are off limits.

Finally, all pointers and setters need lots of exercise and outdoor time, in all types of weather. If you plan to use your dog for hunting, you need to give them plenty of time to acclimate to outdoor temperatures.

Hunting Flushing Breeds

Flushing dogs “flush out” game. Many birds, such as pheasants, hide when in danger. A trained flushing breed will go after the bird to get them to take flight. A trained flushing breed will then watch the bird fly, mark where the bird has fallen, and retrieve upon command

English Springer Spaniels and Cocker Spaniels are some of the best-known flushing breeds.

English Springer and Cocker Spaniels are closely related breeds. They are both loyal and affectionate family pets, but like many hunting breeds, they need daily outdoor exercise in all kinds of weather.

Spaniels like to nip and play bite, but they are usually very gentle around children. These pups like chasing after prey, so they must be well-trained before you can let them off the leash in places that have squirrels and rabbits. Spaniels are also chewers and like to explore with their mouth. Make sure they have lots of chew toys and take special care to train them to keep away from clothing, human food, and kids’ toys.

Hunting Retriever Breeds

Retrievers were originally bred to help with waterfowl hunting, and some have been trained to help fishing crews. Retriever hunting breeds include Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Standard Poodles, Portuguese Water Dogs, and Labrador Retrievers.

Retrievers have a well-earned reputation as a friendly, loyal breed. They are relatively easy to train and make excellent family pets.

However, like all hunting breeds, retrievers need lots of daily outdoor exercise in all kinds of weather. They are exceptionally playful, and like to spend time wrestling and rolling with other dogs. Retrievers like to nip and play bite. Make sure you provide lots of toys that satisfy their need to chew. You will need to train them to keep away from clothing, foods, and kids’ toys.

Hunting Breeds From History

Many of today’s companion dogs started out as hunting dogs. Did you know that Akitas started out helping Japanese hunters flushing out deer, wild boar, and even bear?

Shibu Inus are another type of Japanese hunter. History records Shibu Inus hunting as far back as the third century, although today they are considered companion dogs.

Alaskan Malamutes have a history of helping Native American tribes hunt polar bears, and were also trained to alert hunters when they spotted a seal’s blow hole in the water.

The Cane Corso can be traced back to Roman times. This descendent of the Mastiff was often used in Italy as a guard dog and a farm dog, but their power and agility also made them a favorite hunting dog for big game such as deer, wild boar, and even bears.

While Norwegian Elkhounds have a reputation as a family-friendly watchdog, they started out as tracking dogs for the Vikings. Norwegian Elkhounds were known for their ability to hunt elk, wolves, and bears.

Keeping Hunters and Hounds Happy in the Home

While the loyalty, friendliness, and intelligence of hunting breeds usually make hunters and hounds excellent family pets, owners must make accommodations for their hunting ancestry.

All hunting and hound breeds crave outdoors exercise. If you plan to bring a hunting or hound breed into your home, make sure you provide plenty of outdoor walks or yard play. These breeds need outdoor playtime in all kinds of weather. Most hunting dogs are comfortable in cold, wet weather and don’t mind being out in the elements. If you’re looking for a low-energy homebody, these breeds may not be right for you.

Most hunter breeds like to use their mouth to explore. In the dog world, this is called “mouthiness.” Your hunting breed will want to nip and play-bite. They explore new objects by placing them in their mouth. Their hunting and retrieving instincts make them reluctant to give up new objects, so that additional training may be necessary.

Hunters, and especially hounds, have an excellent sense of smell. It will be difficult for them to ignore the smells of foods, dirty laundry, garbage, and even diapers. Even if you train them to abstain, many pups will occasionally give in to instinct. The best prevention is to keep strong-smelling items out of your pet’s reach.

Hunting and hound breeds like to be around people and other dogs. They usually do well in multi-dog households and are not instinctively wary of strangers. This friendliness and sociability also make them good with children.

Hunters like training and appreciate order. If you plan to bring a hunting or hound breed into your household, take the time to train your pup thoroughly. These dogs were bred to follow orders. They respond to strong leaders. Setting clear expectations and providing consistency can help keep your pet calm and centered.
